Applying to Anthropic’s Claude for Startups Program as a Solo Developer ($1,000 API Credit)

A one-person sole proprietorship met the conditions. The surprise obstacle was ‘a company email on the same domain as the website’. That turned out to be free to set up.

What you get
1 year of team seats (up to 5) + $1,000 API credit
Credit validity
6 months from the day it is granted
Result
within 72 hours · sign within 14 days if asked

We were cutting costs and wondered whether Team seats could serve as a spare tank for when a usage limit hits. Anthropic runs a program called ‘Claude for Startups’.

A company email without paying for a mailbox

We didn’t need a new mailbox — just mail sent to the company address passed on to an existing inbox. A free forwarding service plus three lines in the domain’s settings table (two receiving servers and one destination) did it.

On the free plan the forwarding rule is publicly visible in the domain settings, so it forwards to an already-public contact inbox, not a personal one.

Pledges made at signup — easy to miss

The one thing to be careful about if accepted

The team-join screen offers ‘bring your data over’. Choosing it closes the existing personal account and cancels its subscription, irreversibly (per the docs). Always choose ‘keep both’. The terms also say your company name may be listed publicly as a participant.

What we still don’t know

We will add the result to this post, even if we are turned down.

Plenty here is still unsolved. If you know a better way, say so — it gets read and answered.
