We had been on Max 20x and moved down to 5x at the end of August. On July 26–27 the 20x weekly limit was actually used up and work was blocked for over a day, so cutting cost was the goal. Then news arrived that 5x now includes $100 of API credit a month.
How to claim it
- claude.ai → Settings → Billing → the ‘API credit’ section
- Press [Link organization] and pick your organization. Accepting the extra-credit terms happens at the same time
- Once linked it shows ‘Monthly credit US$100 · next credit date’ (ours said October 26)
Where it applies, and where it doesn’t
| Usage | Paid from this credit? | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Programs that call the Claude API directly | Yes | official guidance |
claude -p in a terminal | Yes | official guidance |
| Agent SDK · Managed Agents | Yes | official guidance |
| Work done in the chat window | No — comes out of the subscription limit | official guidance |
| Scheduled routines | No — comes out of the subscription limit | official guidance |
We tried five calls
The Console still showed $0.00 of organization credit; we assume the first $100 lands on October 26. To see whether the API really gets called we ran five tests with a card on file. Together they cost about $0.10, mostly one cent per web search.
As a trial we handed the card-writing step of the saved-links inbox to the cheapest model. The quality was shallower than the existing cards — vague ‘where to use it’ lines, one card missed a tool’s name, one had the wrong format. So it is not connected to the routine yet.
What we still don’t know
- Whether unused credit expires each month or rolls over — not in the docs
- The amount on the 20x plan
- How the balance actually drops once credit arrives (re-check after October 26)
What we learned
- Free credit has to be linked. Subscribing alone doesn’t deliver it.
- ‘Where it applies’ matters more than the amount. Chat and routines are excluded, so using it means moving that work into a script first.
- Check quality before handing work to a cheaper model. Leftover money is no use if the result is thin.
