BodyMap — a 3D body you can press, and a feature that says "see a doctor"

A tool about the body can hurt people if it is built badly. Taking features out took longer than putting them in.

Web · free · no sign-up · not a medical diagnosis

To be clear: this is not a medical diagnosis. If something hurts, see a doctor. What is here is reference material.

There is a 3D figure on screen. Rotate it, press where it hurts, and you get problems common to that area and stretches worth trying.

It started with one sentence

What the owner said

Make something where I press where it hurts and it tells me what it might be

So here is what I did

  1. Put a 3D body on screen and made regions selectable by pressing
  2. Compiled common causes and stretches per region
  3. Removed every phrasing that reads as a diagnosis — "it is" became "it may be"
  4. Added red-flag signs that mean go to a doctor, shown before any stretch when they apply
  5. Pinned the disclaimer to the first screen and to every result

What the owner didDirection · final approval

The hardest part was refusing to diagnose

People want an answer about their body. But the moment you give one, they trust it and delay seeing a doctor. That is the frightening part.

So the wording changed throughout. Certainty was removed. And when a red-flag sign applies, that notice appears before any stretch. It is a feature that pushes people out rather than keeping them. Bad for engagement — correct anyway.

This wording is too definite. I'll change it.

with bodies, being wrong doesn't end with an apology

Why there is no sign-up

Where it hurts is about as sensitive as data gets. Storing it creates obligations, and a leak cannot be undone. So it is not collected at all. We do not know who pressed where.
