How to get over a breakup when you cannot stop thinking about them

You wake up and for a second everything is normal. Then you remember. The rest of the day is a loop: replaying the last conversation, checking whether they posted anything, drafting a message you know you should not send. Friends say it gets better with time, and you believe them in theory. It just does not feel like time is moving.

A breakup is a real loss, even when it was the right call, even when you were the one who ended it. It is normal for it to take over your head for a while.

Why it hurts this much

Why you keep checking

Looking at their profile, rereading old messages, asking mutual friends how they are doing. Each check gives a tiny bit of relief and then makes the pull stronger. It works a lot like any other habit loop: the more you feed it, the louder it gets.

You do not have to be perfect about it. But making the checks harder helps more than willpower alone. Mute or unfollow for now, archive the chat, move the photos into a folder you do not open. None of that has to be permanent. It just gives your head a quieter place to heal.

Small things that help

When to get more support

It is worth talking to a doctor or counselor if, weeks later, you are still struggling to sleep, eat or get through work, if you are drinking more to get through the evenings, or if the sadness has turned into hopelessness. If you have any thoughts of not wanting to be here, please reach out to a crisis line today rather than waiting.

Saying it somewhere

After a while it can feel like friends have heard enough, and you stop saying how much it still hurts. Writing it down somewhere nobody knows it is you, the angry parts and the parts that still miss them, can let some of it out without having to explain yourself to anyone.

If there is something you have been carrying alone, writing it down without your name attached is one way to set it down.

Confesso — write anonymously, be heard

If the heaviness does not lift, please do not carry it by yourself.
